Gaining control over your life can be challenging.

Often, it can be easy to allow the opinions of others or even life responsibilities to cloud out your true happiness.

Unfortunately, not regulating your life can lead to a snowball of mental and even physical implications.

Missed opportunities, depression, and a repetitive existence are all repercussions of not regulating areas of your life.

Not to mention the spiralling effects of anxiety that arise when you don’t feel in control.

Time for some self-examination

Gaining the ability to regulate your life may seem daunting initially, especially when insecurities or even responsibilities hold you back.

However, the victory is well worth the challenge.

When people regulate their actions, they are happier and experience a high quality of life.

One of the primary ways to begin your initial steps towards happiness is to conduct a self-examination.

Let’s consider five questions that you can ask yourself to determine if you are genuinely in control of your life.

#1. Do You Wake Up Happy?

Sure, waking up early in the morning can cause mild irritation, especially when the bed feels warm and cosy.

However, despite the frustration, individuals excited about what the day has in store wake up invigorated, ready to take on the day.

The challenges or difficult situations that may arise do not trouble excited, happy people.

Instead, individuals who self-regulate make the necessary inner adjustments to enjoy their day.

If they know they dislike their job, they’ll do their best to think about the positive side of their work.

If they feel overwhelmed by their tasks, they’ll take it slow.

These small changes and demonstrations of initiative show that you are indeed in the driver’s seat of your life.

#2. Do You Engage in Activities that You Enjoy?

Whether it’s going to work or spending time with friends, it’s essential to find some joy that improves your mood.

When we engage in activities that don’t feed our soul, we are not in control of our lives.

  • Do you enjoy going to your job?
  • Do you enjoy hanging out with your social crowd?
  • Why are you engaging in these activities?

Answers to these questions will determine your motive.

Sometimes you have to do what’s best for you and your life, not what’s best for everyone else.

In turn, you will be able to assess your true happiness.

Although we cannot enjoy each aspect of our daily activities, we can adjust our attitude.

 Find something you like about the things you have to engage in and do.

Discovering things you enjoy about something you don’t like will help you maintain a positive attitude despite outside circumstances.

#3. Are You Using Your Full Potential?

The amount of positive effort we put into our daily tasks is evident in our unique potential.

One way to determine if you are in control is to measure how effectively you are pushing yourself.

Are you allowing personal weaknesses to dominate your behaviour?

Are you challenging your mind and body to make healthy changes?

By understanding this, you can determine if you are using your full potential.

What consumes your mind is what controls your life.

What does potential have to do with self-regulation?

When we overcome a challenge, we are pushing ourselves.

That is the exact definition of being in control or self-regulating.

You are driving through the obstacles to achieving something bigger than yourself.

#4. Are You Working Towards Your Purpose?

It is easy to engage in activities daily that pay the bills or help you get by.

When this occurs, you may become complacent; simply going with the motions.

Your purpose is what motivates you, what excites you, and what keeps you going.

If you are not fulfilling that purpose, you will ultimately be left unhappy.

It is essential to understand what your passions are and take steps towards fulfilling them.

#5. Do You Often Feel Obligated?

When we aren’t regulating our actions, we may feel like each activity or event is an obligation.

We may think it is something we have to do to appease others.

No one has power over you unless you give it to them

In addition, we never truly make ourselves happy.

A powerful way to overcome an obligation is to learn the art of saying no.

Saying no will help you stop feeling obliged in doing things you don’t like or believe in.

This simple action will help you to regain your control.
